Bir Hospital—established in 1947 BS as the first hospital of Nepal was named by honoring the 11th Prime Minister of Nepal, Bir Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Till the 1980s, gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry services were available in this hospital. Due to the evolution of technology, limited premises, and increment in workload; these services were moved to Kanti Children Hospital Maharajgunj, Patan Mental Hospital Lalitpur, and Indra Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah Maternity hospital Thapathali respectively.
To be precise, NAMS is a part of Bir Hospital—plan for National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was derived in 2059/60 BS. Afterwards, NAMS started its educational journey in the year 2060 BS by running Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) programs. Indra Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah Maternity hospital, Nepal Army hospital, Kanti Children Hospital, Nepal Eye Hospital, and Patan Hospital are the hospitals affiliated to NAMS. NAMS is running its programs in these hospitals under the memorandum understanding, at present, NAMS admits more than 200 Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) candidates every year. Likewise, the advanced form of course on neurosurgery was introduced in 2061 BS, as a “Fellow of national academy of medical sciences (FNAMS)”. Further, the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgery (M.Ch) programs were started in 2067 BS.
NAMS has 13 affiliated hospitals outside and inside of the Kathmandu valley. Seeing the current as well as public demand and its need, NAMS is running various important academic courses in different levels. Students from NAMS are confident, competent and trained to meet the public demand for best health care facilities. There is a huge gap in health services between urban and rural cities. To reduce this gap, NAMS has an idea to accommodate the government hospitals in academic activities. They have a vision to make the health services available to every poor person who is living in lack of health services. As mentioned by NAMS in its brochure, NAMS has conceptualized the new organogram to make its dream come true.
